Jeremy McCarter Joins Newsweek as Senior Writer

Jeremy McCarter has joined Newsweek as a senior writer, covering arts, culture and entertainment. McCarter will also occasionally cover broader cultural, social and political topics for both the magazine and Newsweek.com.

McCarter comes to Newsweek after three years as the theater critic of New York Magazine. "Jeremy is a terrific writer and a keen observer, and his ability to connect the dots between different ideas, media, themes and genres is precisely the type of sophisticated cultural commentary Newsweek readers expect from the magazine," said Assistant Managing Editor Mark Miller.

Before New York Magazine, McCarter wrote for The New York Sun as one of that paper's original critics when it launched in 2002. His career began at The New Republic, where he edited and oversaw the launch of The New Republic Online and where he remains a contributing editor. He has served on the Pulitzer Drama Jury and the Obie Award Committee, and has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian (UK), Politico and the Best Plays Yearbook. He has edited "Bite the Hand That Feeds You: Essays and Provocations by Henry Fairlie," which will be published by Yale University Press next spring. He studied history and graduated with honors from Harvard.
