Penton Names Carol Wilson as New Editor in Chief of Telephony

Penton Media has promoted Carol Wilson to editor in chief of Telephony magazine and its Web site, www.telephonyonline.com. In her new role, Wilson will be responsible for the editorial direction of Telephony magazine and its supplements, Wireless Review and The Independent, as well as e-media content and events for the publication group. Wilson replaces Dan O’Shea who is leaving the company to pursue other interests.

Wilson, who has covered the telecommunications industry for the past 22 years, rejoined Telephony in 2004 as editor at large. She began her telecom career as news editor at Telephony in 1985, and became editor of the magazine three years later. She later served as a founding editor of two magazines – Inter@ctive Week and The Net Economy – as well as a news and information Web site, Broadband Edge.

Design New England Magazine Adds "Green" Feature

Beginning with its July/August issue, Design New England: The Magazine of Splendid Homes and Gardens, introduces an expanded focus on "Green" design as a regular department covering environmentally friendly developments in furnishings, landscape and architecture. The magazine, published by Boston Globe Media, also welcomes Molly Jane Quinn as a new associate editor and adds three additional contributing editors to its fold: Meaghan O'Neill, Estelle Bond Guralnick and Bruce Irving.

The new recurring Green feature will highlight products, people and design ideas that will help readers design, build and live in more environmentally responsible ways. The July/August issue features a roundup of outdoor chairs made of sustainable or recycled materials; a profile of Boston landscape designer Michael Blier, who created eco-savvy outdoor spaces for a luxury condominium building; and a focus on a Maine house that won the nation’s highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating.

Sherman's Travel Magazine Taps Ernie Renzulli as Publisher

Gearing up for its second successful year, Sherman's Travel magazine has appointed veteran magazine publisher Ernie Renzulli as its new publisher.

Renzulli, 58, comes to the magazine with extensive experience in the luxury magazine market, including serving as publisher of Robb Report, Golf Illustrated, Golf Magazine and Absolute New York. He succeeds publisher Alan Stiles, who led the magazine's launch last year and who will continue to serve as consultant to the magazine.

Chicago magazine Debuts New Look

Chicago magazine, the largest citymonthly in the country, sports a new look and feel this month that not only presents a vibrant color scheme and more accessible layout but also reflects a growing and dynamic magazine.

Jennifer Moore, the magazine's new art director, expertly led the redesign, including a slight update to magazine's logo. Earlier this summer the magazine's website, http://www.chicagomag.com/ got revamped, too, with a cleaner and more visually appealing design, as well as new features and enhancements that improve navigation and functionality.

Functional Ingredients Magazine to Debut in September

New Hope Natural Media plans to launch Functional Ingredients (http://www.functionalingredientsmag.com/), a new resource for the global health and nutrition industry, focused on delivery of strategic, innovative and scientific news and information related to functional ingredients and their applications. Functional Ingredients will replace New Hope’s current Functional Foods & Nutraceuticals (FF&N). The magazine's first issue will debut in September, 2007.

The publication will target the ingredient supply and product manufacturer communities with reporting, analysis and perspective on developments and events shaping the industry. Data will be presented in graphs, charts and snapshots designed to assist readers in making informed business decisions. Functional Ingredients will also feature opinion pieces on current issues from industry leaders, marketers, brand managers and formulators.

BusinessWeek Appoints Ellen Joan Pollock as Executive Editor

Ellen Joan Pollock has been named Executive Editor of BusinessWeek magazine. In her new role, Ms. Pollock will be responsible for the editorial operations of BusinessWeek's global print edition. She succeeds John Byrne, who was named Executive Editor/Editor-in-Chief of BusinessWeek.com in June.

Before joining BusinessWeek, Ms. Pollock spent 18 years at The Wall Street Journal. She most recently served as the Deputy Page One editor, managing the senior group of wordsmiths who make up the Page One staff, and editing many important pieces, including much of the series on corporate scandals that won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting. She also supervised a series about living with cancer that won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting.

Conde Nast to Close Jane Magazine and Website

Jane magazine will cease publication with its August issue, it was announced today by Charles H. Townsend, President & CEO of Conde Nast Publications. The website, janemag.com, will also be shut down.

"This was a very difficult decision for us," Mr. Townsend said. "We worked diligently to make Jane a success. However, we have come to believe that the magazine and website will not fulfill our long-term business expectations."

Jane was launched in September, 1997.

Scientific American Launches New Version of Magazine

Scientific American, America’s first science magazine, has launched an updated version of the publication. Beginning in July, the redesigned magazine will deliver more news, opinion, and interactivity and present it all in more accessible and engaging ways. All this will be in addition to delivering the tradition of excellence in science journalism that Scientific American’s three million readers have come to depend on.

"For well over a century, Scientific American has been where science and technology authorities have explained their work directly to the public," said John Rennie, Scientific American’s editor-in-chief. "The new, reengineered version, with its heavier emphasis on explanatory images, bulleted summaries and greater interactivity with the web site, will help both mainstream consumers and enthusiasts to better grasp how science and technology impact everyone’s lives across a broad range of issues."

The redesigned publication is part of a broader brand strategy by parent Holtzbrinck Publishers which also owns trade book publishers St. Martin's Press and Farrar, Straus and Giroux, stressing interactivity and integrated platforms. Scientific American’s website already offers podcasts, video and blogs, as well as stand-alone articles and news, and the reengineered print version will help drive more traffic to those online features.

Chicago Magazine Acquires Chicago Home & Garden Magazine

Chicago magazine has acquired Chicago Home & Garden and will combine the Lake Forest-based publication with Chicago HOME, Chicago magazine's bi-monthly shelter publication. The combined publication will appear on newsstands beginning with the September/October issue, under the name Chicago HOME + Garden, and it will continue to provide the high-quality editorial content that readers of both Chicago Home & Garden and Chicago HOME enjoy and expect.

"The publication will offer readers and advertisers the best of both magazines," said Randy Hano, the publisher of Chicago magazine and of Chicago HOME. Slate Magazine Launches Slate V
